An unexpected animal photobomb has put a local photographer in the limelight, after her snaps of a magpie swooping a pair of newlyweds went viral.

Karen Parr, who has been photographing weddings in the area for nine years, was blown away when her October 8 photos of Armidale couple Sara and Phillip Maria spread to Buzzfeed, the BBC and the Sydney Moing Herald. She fielded calls and emails from London, New York and even Denmark.

“It was a bit of a crazy 24 hours!” she said. Karen said she thought people from overseas were fascinated by the idea that “everything kills you in Australia,” while Australians found the situation completely relatable.

“We’ve got calls and emails from people overseas, saying, you know, it’s the typical Australian thing.” 

She said the wedding party had been avoiding magpies all day, and didn’t realise they had captured the moment on camera until the reception. Karen tried recruiting one the groomsmen to give a lookout, but said the birds were too fast.

She said that although she often had to fight with the weather and lighting to take the wedding photos, “I’ve never encountered any animal attack before!” 

Sara said that while the photos were “a bit of a laugh”, they weren’t the focus of the special day. She said she and Phillip did finally get their perfect shot.
